Boston University verifies that Signify’s UVC light source can effectively inhibit the new coronavirus

Signify announced that research conducted jointly with the National New Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratory (NEIDL) of Boston University has confirmed that Signify’s UVC ultraviolet light source can effectively inactivate the new coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 that causes COVID-19.

In the early stages of the new coronavirus epidemic, Dr. Anthony Griffiths, associate professor of medical microbiology at Boston University, and his team began to develop products that could eliminate the virus. They used UVC ultraviolet light source products from Signify company in their study to explore the ability of different doses of UVC ultraviolet radiation to inactivate viruses on the sample surface. The research team used a radiation dose of 5mJ/cm² (radiation time of 6 seconds) and successfully inactivated 99% of the new coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. It is possible to inactivate 99.9999% of the new coronavirus using a radiation dose of 22mJ/cm² (radiation time of 25 seconds) according to the data.

“Our experimental results show that the virus can be completely inactivated after a certain dose of UVC ultraviolet radiation for a few seconds.” Dr. Anthony Griffiths said, “We are very excited about this discovery and hope to accelerate the development of related products. To suppress the spreading of 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19).”

“I am pleased to see the fruitful collaboration with Boston University on novel Coronavirus. Boston University has confirmed that Signify UVC light source products can effectively suppress viruses and help companies and factories provide a safe working environment.” Signify Chief Executive Officer Eric Rondolat said, “Given that this technology has great potential against the new coronaviruses, Signify promises to share it widely with other lighting companies. In order to meet the rapidly growing market demand, we will further enhance the production capacity of related products in the coming months”.

As a leader in the field of UVC UV light, Signify has more than 35 years of extensive experience and will continue to promote the development of UV technology. The company has detailed data and successful cases to prove its innovative ability in the field of UVC ultraviolet lighting. All products follow the highest safety standards from design, manufacture, and use. It is hoped that these advances in UV LED research and commercial applications will receive more attention to help fight pandemics and protect human health.
