LED health lighting bright prospects

In the era of increasingly powerful technology support, people’s emphasis on quality of life, health and safety has increased. The demand for lighting has not only applied to the surface to help “see”, but also paid more attention to the depth of lighting products. The level of “invisible” impact, then put forward new requirements for the health and comfort of the lighting environment.

In the LED products have become the mainstream of the lighting industry today, Blu-ray hazards still exist, glare and flicker are also the main factors of LED harm to health, people are also shifted from the question of “energy saving” LED lighting to “health, comfort” concerns.

On November 20th, 2017, the national key research and development program “Strategic Advanced Electronic Materials” focused on “photobiological mechanism and application research for healthy lighting” in Suzhou.

Taking “light and health” as the core of the study, through comparison studies and light quality evaluation experiments, the short-, medium-, and long-term impact mechanisms and laws of semiconductor lighting on human health were determined, and corresponding physiological and pathological databases were formed. By clarifying the mechanism of photobiological influence of semiconductor lighting products and forming an objective physiological index evaluation method, a technical solution for enhancing the health of semiconductor lighting products will be presented, industrialization of healthy lighting applications will be realized, and a “light health” standard system will be constructed.

What is health lighting?

The so-called health lighting is to improve and improve the conditions and quality of people’s work, study and life through LED lighting, and promote mental and physical health.

At present, there are two major problems with home lighting. One is that the blue light is too high, and the second is too little red light. We usually look at the mobile phone and the eyes are particularly tired. It is because the blue light is too high. It not only hurts the eyes but also affects the endocrine. Japanese scientist Shuji Nakamura, the inventor of the blue LED, said that the first-generation blue LEDs that are commonly used now do harm to the eyes and even cause cancer when severe. If the red light is too low, it will cause skin allergies and induce depression.

Whether it is the incandescent lamps used in our daily home lighting or the decorative lanterns, if they are not properly used or controlled, the lights will be too strong, too dark, or too often, and will change over time. Health causes a certain degree of harm. Health lighting, on the other hand, puts forward special requirements for important indicators such as lighting quality, technology, illumination, uniformity, glare, strobe, light source color rendering, color temperature, and radiation.

Lin Yandan, Professor of Department of Light Source and Lighting Engineering at Fudan University, pointed out: “The evaluation of lighting quality should be based on a single assessment of visual effects, gradual oversight, and double evaluation of visual effects and non-visual effects, especially the latter is closely related to human health. The influence of circadian rhythms and biological effects has also led people to re-examine and think about the definition of lighting quality.”

Health lighting industry has bright prospects

The scientific research of lighting continues to deepen, and the relationship between light and health is more and more discovered by humans. For example, lighting has expanded into the field of non-visual biological effects. Many studies have shown that light has no visual effect on human eyes through the retina. The light perceived by the ganglion cells can affect the release, sleep, and biological rhythms of melatonin in the night. Regarding the study of the effects of light color on human physiological parameters, Professor Lin Yandan of Fudan University once stated that the results of the study indicate that light has the potential to change the rhythm of life, suppress the secretion of melatonin, increase the core temperature, accelerate the heart rate, and increase the alertness. . Therefore, its future has broad application prospects, such as the treatment of seasonal affective disorder, the use of red and yellow nightlights to help sleep.

These all indicate that the future of the health industry is bright. Today’s lighting market, from environmental protection, energy-saving products to see, the market has become saturated, from the health to see the market is a blue ocean, Nobel Prize winner Shuji Nakamura in Fudan University in December last year made a speech, put forward the first generation of LED products There are blue light hazards, which can even lead to the development of cancer. This problem is present in most of the current market epidemics, including government buildings, banks, and even hospitals, schools, and families. Therefore, with health as the direction, the market will reshuffle and force.

Data from the market also shows that China’s big health industry has a huge cake. The data shows that the annual output value of China’s health service industry accounts for only about 5% of GDP, while the United States’ data has reached 17.6% in 2009. According to relevant departments, by 2020, the total size of China’s health service industry will reach more than 8 trillion yuan.

Many companies enter the field of health lighting

Nowadays, many companies have begun to deploy in this new atmosphere. Many large lighting companies are competing to compete in the field of health care, and they are competing to create a healthy lighting concept and introduce high-quality and healthy lighting fixtures. Philips, GE and others have introduced healthy LED lighting products to help people fall asleep early. Philips has repeatedly developed LED lights and lighting systems for hospital lighting. It wants to provide patients with an anxious and comfortable recovery environment while helping them to complete their work better.
